Instructions
- Preparation: Before the workshop, download the Team Norms Workshop Agenda PDF. Review it to familiarize yourself with the flow of the workshop.
- Introduction (15 minutes): Start the workshop by explaining the concept and importance of team norms. Discuss how they can enhance team communication, collaboration, and overall performance. Use examples if needed.
- Individual Reflection (15 minutes): Ask each team member to spend a few minutes thinking about their own expectations for team behavior and interactions. They should consider questions like:
- How do we want to communicate as a team?
- What behaviors should we encourage and discourage?
- How should we handle disagreements or conflicts?
- Sharing Expectations (30 minutes): Go around the virtual room and have each team member share one or two of their expectations. As the team leader, note these down on a shared digital whiteboard or document.
- Group Discussion (45 minutes): Once all expectations have been shared, facilitate a group discussion to refine and consolidate them into a set of proposed team norms. Encourage open and respectful discussion. Use the Workshop Agenda PDF to guide this discussion.
- Voting on Norms (30 minutes): After the discussion, have the team vote on each proposed norm. Aim for consensus, but be prepared to facilitate decision-making if needed.
- Documenting Team Norms (15 minutes): Once the team norms have been agreed upon, document them in the provided PDF template. Make sure all team members have access to this document.
- Closing and Next Steps (10 minutes): Close the workshop by discussing how the team will uphold these norms and what steps will be taken if norms are not followed. Encourage team members to keep the norms in mind during their day-to-day work and to hold each other accountable.
Remember to take breaks as needed during the workshop to keep everyone engaged and prevent fatigue. The times provided are estimates and may vary depending on your team’s size and dynamics.
